ARTIST OF THE MONTH
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE CLASS TAKES ON INVASIVE PLANTS
Mr. van Wyk's AP Environmental Science students spent the week outside on an invasive plant search and destroy mission around campus.
Students identified eight key invasive species: Japanese knotweed, Tree of Heaven, Garlic Mustard, Multiflora Rose, Mugwort, English Ivy, Milk Thistle, and Japanese Barberry. Their most significant win was pulling out over 30 Tree of Heaven trees, which serve as the host plant for the problematic spotted lanternfly that has appeared throughout Connecticut.
The removal of these invasives is critical, as these plants rapidly proliferate, decreasing biodiversity by choking out native species and providing habitat for pests.
We encourage all members of our community to be vigilant and help in the effort to eradicate invasive species on campus before they become well-established.
